Darias stressed that he is facing this challenge with “illusion and humility” to transform the city into a healthier, more sustainable, inclusive, thriving place “with people at the center”. The meeting, held this morning in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, was also attended by the current mayor of the town, Augusto Hidalgo, and the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands and General Secretary of the PSOE of Gran Canaria, Sebastian Franquis.

Carolina Darias will be the second minister of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to announce her candidacy for the municipal elections to be held in May 2023. The first to do so was the Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto, who advanced in an act of Europa Press the last Monday her intention to run in the PSOE primaries to be the socialist candidate for mayor of Madrid.

However, the forecast is that both remain in the Government until dates closer to the electoral campaign, foreseeably until April, which is when the candidacies must be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).

In fact, this was the behavior of Darias’s predecessor in the Ministry of Health, Salvador Illa, who left the aforementioned department at the end of January 2021, shortly before the electoral campaign for the autonomous communities began in Catalonia, which took place on February 14 of last year.

Government delegate and president of the Canarian Parliament

Darias (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1965) has a degree in Law from the University of La Laguna, belongs to the Superior Corps of General Administrators of the Public Administration of the Canary Islands, and has spent twenty years holding different public positions, beginning with her first position as Councilor in 1999 in his hometown, and going through the Presidency of the Parliament of the Canary Islands or the Government Delegation in the islands.

Before leading the Health portfolio, Darias entered the Government assuming the Ministry of Territorial Policy in January 2020 when she was the Minister of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the socialist Government of the Canary Islands.

Canarian politics was one of the new faces of the coalition Executive that Sánchez designed together with Unidas Podemos, since it was not part of the previous PSOE government alone. Upon being appointed, Moncloa highlighted that she combines a technical profile with a political character.

After leaving the position of councilor in 2004, she became a sub-delegate of the Government in the province of Las Palmas with the arrival of the socialist president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero at La Moncloa and became a delegate of the Government of the Canary Islands in 2008 and until 2011, date in which she became a councilor of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria until 2015.

Subsequently, and until 2019, he held the Presidency of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, from where he jumped to the Ministry of Economy, Knowledge and Employment when the PSOE arrived at the Canary Islands Government in 2019, and from there, to the central Executive in 2020.
