The partial collapse of one of the faces of the cone of the La Palma volcano causes runoffs in various directions

The north face of the cone of the eruption of the volcano of Cumbre Vieja de La Palma has collapsed during the early hours of this Saturday, reported Itahiza Domínguez, of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan).

Through his personal Twitter account, the volcanologist has indicated that the partial collapse of the north face of the cone of the new volcano has led to the emission of lava in several directions.

From the Institute of Volcanology of the Canary Islands (Involcan) they point out one of them “is generating tremendous destruction in its path and making it difficult for our teams to move in the area.”

The new runoffs caused by this collapse run to the west. This has been indicated in statements to La Palma Now by the mayor of El Paso, Sergio Rodríguez. During their journey they have swallowed some constructions in the payments of El Frontón, Alcalá and El Paraíso that had not been razed.

The new lava tongue has thus crossed the LP-2 road and destroyed the Antani company’s warehouse located in the area. In addition, it is affecting the Callejón de La Gata industrial estate, in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, located “much further north of the main wash.”

Rodríguez also pointed out that parallel to the main stream “another lava arm is running, annexed to the old one, through the northern part which, as it is flowing quite quickly, if it continues like this, and does not get into the primary stream, it can do more damage, too, in the Todoque neighborhood. ”

The volcano erupted on September 19 in the municipality of El Paso. Nine days later, the laundry reached the sea in Tazacorte, where he continues to build a fajana. Until this Friday, the area affected by the laundry amounted to 471.8 hectares, that is, 40.6 more than the previous day.
