The Police detain the neo-Nazi who attacked the Podemos premises in Cartagena for damaging a IU headquarters in León

Agents of the National Police have proceeded to arrest a person, a 20-year-old male of Spanish nationality, after being identified as the alleged perpetrator of crimes of damage, against fundamental rights and public freedoms, for attacks on the facilities of the political party Izquierda Unida (IU) in a municipality of León, in the summer of last year.

As a result of the investigations carried out on the attack on the headquarters of the Podemos political party in Cartagena, agents of the National Police began various steps to determine if the detainee for these events had participated in similar previous events, in other parts of the national territory.

The IU units, in a municipality of León, had suffered various attacks with damage to glass and graffiti such as ‘murderous communists’, ‘baked in the oven’, ‘murderous communists’ or ‘1488’, causing damage valued at 1,800 euros. In a first analysis of the graffiti, the agents were already able to assure that they were made by an individual with an “extremist and supremacist” ideology.

The investigation revolved around a comparative analysis of the events that occurred in Cartagena (Murcia) with those that occurred in San Andrés de Rabanedo (León), the study of the multimedia files extracted from his phone and the existence of possible witnesses.

After collecting all the incriminating evidence, agents of the National Police, belonging to the Higher Police Headquarters of the Region of Murcia, have proceeded to arrest the person under investigation and place him at the disposal of the judicial authority.

The young man was already arrested last August by the National Police, accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the Podemos headquarters in Cartagena. The regional deputy of Podemos, Javier Sánchez Serna, highlighted after his arrest that the attack was not “the work of an unbalanced person who acts on his own account; it occurs in the midst of a soup of violence fueled by the extreme right and their hate speech. “and recalled that the headquarters in Cartagena had suffered up to 6 attacks.

According to the information made public by the National Police, in the search carried out at the home of the arrested person, articles of clothing that could have been used on the night of the events were seized. And different knives and other blunt objects were found – boxing fists, a dagger and a dagger -, a balaclava “and a large quantity of clothing with radical symbols and self-indoctrination books.”
