The PP of Castilla y León will ask the Government to compensate the municipalities affected by the emptying of the Zamora reservoir

The Popular Parliamentary Group of the Courts of Castilla y León, today presented a Non-Law Proposal to urge the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to economically compensate the Zamoran municipalities affected by the Ricobayo drain.

The ‘popular’ demand that the Government of Pedro Sánchez urgently, in collaboration with the Diputación de Zamora and the municipalities affected, proceed to the quantification and subsequent payment “both to individuals and to public and private institutions” of financial compensation . “All this without prejudice to the responsibilities that, where appropriate, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge may demand from Iberdrola, as the holder of the concession.”

At the beginning of June 2021, the Ricobayo dam held 667 cubic hectometres of water (58% of its capacity). On August 3, it only had 130 hectometres (11% of its capacity). In less than two months, almost half of all the water in this reservoir was turbinated in this dam. “This has meant that the 19 municipalities that have established part of their life around the Esla reservoir have seen the season decline completely at the beginning of summer, at its peak,” the popular explain in their NLP

“The situation of continuous drainage in these months has prevented bathing, fishing, water sports, leisure around the reservoir, with the consequent losses of hotels and accommodation at a time, the summer in which they had pinned their hopes to recover the losses derived from the pandemic. ”

The PP also points out that one of the reasons for the emptying of Ricobayo derives directly from the needs of the energy system. “And at this moment in which the price of the megawatt is the most expensive in the history of our country, the generation companies, replacing other more expensive ones (such as gas, which faces very high prices in the summer of 2021 ) resort to sources such as hydraulics to lower production costs ”

On the other hand, the so-called “regulatory nature” of the Ricobayo reservoir means that precisely this reservoir and not others have suffered this drop in elevation. “It is evident that the current energy policy has brought as a consequence, in addition to the most expensive bills in the history of Spain, chaining records followed in the price of the megawatt, a search by electricity companies to produce at less expensive prices in order to reduce it. , as they allege “.
