The PSC of Barcelona places Bonet at the head of Mobility and Alarcón will be the spokesperson for the group

Changes in the Barcelona City Council. After the half of the mandate, the PSC, a minority partner of the municipal government, has decided to place Laia Bonet at the head of Mobility to replace Rosa Alarcón, who is left without any portfolio and becomes the spokesperson for the municipal group. Among the new attributions of Bonet, which maintains its responsibilities in digital policies, Agenda 2030 and Sports, will be the presidency of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), the public metro and bus company.

The socialist leader and first deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni, has argued that these movements, reported to the mayor Ada Colau, should serve to “improve the effectiveness of government action” in the period of economic reactivation after the pandemic. In addition to the changes in mobility, it has announced the appointment of Pau Solanilla, of Digital Future Society (Mobile Word Capital) as the new Commissioner for Promotion of the City.

With the new distribution of portfolios, Bonet gains weight within the municipal Executive. According to Collboni, his appointment to the head of Mobility responds in part to the fact that the until now deputy mayor of Agenda 2030 has under her jurisdiction the management of European funds, and many of the projects proposed by the council have to do with the “transformation of public transport ”.

Mobility has been one of the areas that had generated the most friction between government partners until the middle of the mandate. The PSC had been reluctant behind the scenes at the speed with which some street and car lane pacifications were made during the pandemic. Months before, the cycling entities had accused Alarcón of not betting on active mobility. However, in his appearance Collboni has defended his management, has described it as “successful” and has given as an example the regulation of the sharing or agreements with the taxi sector.

In his new stage, Bonet will have among his challenges to deploy and enforce the Pact for Mobility. And, as president of TMB, she will have to re-drive after the fall in users due to the pandemic and that she has not yet fully recovered.
