The Cuban regime has been resisting in recent years to fall in a dependency of China like the one it had from the USSR in its day. However, the urgency of alleviating the economic collapse suffered by the island, which in turn fuels street protests, may force Havana to draw closer to Beijing, which, from the outset, finds reluctance on both sides and concern in Washington.
