The strange case of a baby born with a tail in Brazil | Digital Trends Spanish

From time to time, doctors come across real oddities that cause astonishment among the scientific community.

One of these recent cases occurred in Brazil, where a boy was born with a kind of tail 12 centimeters long. According to experts, this is such an unusual event that only 40 such cases have been recorded in the world.

The birth was published in the Journal of Pediatric Case Reports, where the child’s identity has been kept anonymous.

According to the publication, the minor was born prematurely and without other complications. However, a subsequent examination determined that he had jaundice and a “rounded fibroelastic appendix approximately 4 centimeters in its greatest diameter, supported by a 12-centimeter fibrous cord in the left paravertebral lumbosacral region,” the journal notes.

According to the doctors who have followed this case, human tails are classified as true tails or “pseudo-tails.”

“The pseudo-tails are protrusions basically composed of adipose or cartilaginous tissue and the presence of bone elements. True human tails are very rare, with approximately 40 cases reported in the literature, ”says the report signed by the doctors who have studied this birth.

The tail of the minor emerges from its left buttock and ends in a kind of ball of fat four centimeters wide. The birth occurred at the Albert Sabin Children’s Hospital in Fortaleza and the news has caused astonishment among the residents of the town.

After the doctors discovered that the tail did not affect the baby’s nervous system, they proceeded to remove it with a quick intervention.

When they removed it, the professionals realized that the tail was invertebrate tissue while the ball was made up of embryonic connective tissue fat.

Now it is hoped that this case will help the scientific community to study these types of events that are “rare congenital anomalies and describe protrusions around the midline of the lumbosacral region covered by skin, which represents an embryonic trace,” according to the researchers.
