Sony confirmed that in the coming months, PlayStation 5 users will receive one of the most requested features: support for variable refresh rate, or VRR. According to the company, this option will allow the screen refresh rate to be dynamically synchronized with the graphical output of the PS5.
The company also ensures that this will bring important benefits in the visual section, which includes sharper graphics, smoother scenes and a more constant experience due to minimizing the drop in frames per second.
“Gameplay for many PS5 titles feels smoother as cutscenes render instantly, graphics look sharper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games may be fully optimized for VRR via a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.
Sony also assured that it will allow PS5 owners to apply VRR to games that do not officially support it. “This feature can improve the video quality of some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can disable this option at any time.
This could be a good way to improve some games like Elden Ring which launched with some performance issues on the PS5 version.
The company has not mentioned the exact date for the launch of VRR and only noted that it should happen in the coming months.
