The Wizink vaccination center in Madrid closes its doors on Sunday after 1.25 million punctures

The mass vaccination point that the Ministry of Health opened in the Sports Palace of the Community of Madrid will close its doors this Sunday, June 5, after almost 1.25 million doses supplied. The center opened its doors in April 2021, to reinforce the vaccination campaign against COVID-19, and as the management of Summa 112 has transferred to the unions, with whom it met this Wednesday, the health professionals who continue in the Winzk Center will be transferred on Monday the 6th to the Nursing Emergency Hospital Isabel Zendal.

As indicated by the Ministry of Health, the self-appointment system is maintained in 16 hospitals of the public network in the region for people over 12 years of age and 13 of them will serve children between 5 and 11 years of age. The medical college will continue to be open from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., while the Primary Care health centers will continue to vaccinate until June 17.

There are currently 203 professionals working at the Wizink Center, mainly nurses, emergency health technicians, warders and doctors, who will be referred to Zendal starting Monday. As indicated by the president of the Summa-AMYTS union section, “without an alternative, temporarily, until the management decides what to do” with the Primary Care Emergency Services (SUAP) closed in March 2020.

As explained by the SATSE nursing union, a large part of the nurses who worked in the SUAPs before the pandemic are assigned to Wizink, which were closed in March 2020 and are still not operational more than two years later, and which they had not been transferred to other devices. “These personnel have been stumbling throughout the pandemic and now they are being taken to Zendal, with the problems that this entails,” says its secretary of Acción Sindical Ricardo Furió.

The Wizink Center vaccination center opened its doors on April 9, 2021 and at peak activity has come to remain operational 24 hours a day. At that time, there were two other mass vaccination centers in the Community: the Zendal Hospital itself and the one that was installed in the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, which was closed in September 2021.
