Samsung Galaxy Watch 3

The best of all Android

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 (starting at $ 399) is the closest thing to an Apple Watch for your Android phone. By this we mean that it is a delightful combination of design and solid hardware, reliable and attractive software, and a nifty, user-friendly control system. The Galaxy Watch 3 uses Samsung’s Tizen OS instead of Google’s Wear OS, and it’s much better for it.

Before talking about your software, let’s consider your design. The round case comes in two sizes, a 41mm one for smaller wrists and a larger 45mm one. It has an AMOLED touchscreen on the front, and the bezel that surrounds it is more than just a decorative feature – it’s the key to controlling your watch.

It’s a wonderfully ergonomic experience to rotate the bezel with your finger and navigate through the software menus, then use the touchscreen to select your options. It’s neater and easier to use than similar systems built into the crown of some Wear OS smartwatches. Samsung’s software is brilliant, attractive, fast, and reliable, plus it’s packed with features.

The watch receives notifications from your phone, measures heart rate, takes blood oxygen levels, tracks activities and fitness, monitors your sleep, and can even take an EKG reading. The battery lasts a full day with heavy use, but it can last up to two days if you turn off the watch at night.

All of this adds up to a highly desirable smartwatch, which works with any Android smartphone via Samsung’s Wear app, it even works with Apple’s iPhone (if you don’t mind missing out on some key features). Prices for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 start at $ 399, so it’s not a cheap smartwatch, but it’s so solid and usable that it’s worth buying.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3

The best Wear OS

Best Android smart watches

Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 represents the pinnacle of Wear OS smartwatch technology right now; It excels at providing a long battery life thanks to the ingenious use of a second screen. It is the first smartwatch available with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor, as well as being much more capable than the old Snapdragon Wear 3100, found in most competing models.

This fast processor is more energy efficient on its own, but in the TicWatch Pro 3 it is combined with a second LCD screen, which takes care of the ambient screen – which is always on – to drastically reduce power consumption. We got three days of use of the TicWatch Pro 3 in our review, which is three times what many other smartwatches can offer. Mobvoi has used this technology before, but has enhanced it here with a backlight, making it easier to view at night. Also, if you use essential mode, the standby mode can be extended to 45 days by removing some of the connected features.

You can track your fitness, sleep, and activities with the TicWatch Pro 3, which also has a heart rate sensor and is capable of reading oxygen levels in your blood. It has an IP68 water resistance rating, plus many Mobvoi apps with breathing exercises, relaxation methods, and exercise plans. While the style is a bit ordinary, it is well built and comfortable to wear, despite the 47mm size.

Its weak point is Google’s Wear OS software, which is not as reliable as Samsung’s Tizen, but the TicWatch Pro 3 will receive an update to the new Wear OS3 from Samsung and Google in 2022. But leaving that aside, the Mobvoi TicWatch The $ 299 Pro 3 is the most powerful smartwatch you can buy for your Android phone, not to mention it has the longest battery life.

Skagen Falster 3

The most fashionable

The Skagen Falster 3 ($ 295) perfectly balances an understated design with the best technology. The 42mm body has a 1.2-inch OLED screen and three buttons on the side for a stylish look that fits most wrists. The stainless steel Falster 3 comes in bronze gray with a choice of colored straps, or in an all-black stealth design if you choose the special edition Falster 3 X By Kygo.

It uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 platform with 1GB of RAM, it also has NFC for Google Pay, GPS, a heart rate monitor, the ability to make and receive calls from your phone and the latest version of Google’s WearOS software.

Performance is good too and the battery will last for a day even with a training session, plus it fully charges in about an hour. The WearOS drawbacks disappoint, but are downplayed in the excellent Skagen Falster 3.

If the design is too minimalist for you, take a look at the Fossil Gen 5, which shares the same technology, but in a slightly larger body with a 44mm version.

Moto 360

The best style

Moto 360 watch with brown strap

After a much-needed price cut to $ 299, the Moto 360 has become a more tempting option. Made of thick stainless steel, and available in gold, steel, and black finishes with a variety of straps, it’s a smartwatch with a great look.

The top button on the side of the case swivels to navigate WearOS easily and there’s a heart rate monitor on the back. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform with 1GB of RAM powers the Moto 360.

We have added this watch to the list due to its sleek design and manageable size, making it suitable for many people. Plus, its simple software rigidly sticks to the standard WearOS for relatively smooth performance. Battery life is good too, although it won’t last you more than a full day.

Fossil Gen 5E

Best for women

The Fossil’s Gen 5E comes in two sizes, with the 42mm model designed for small wrists, and it comes with an 18mm strap. There are two versions, gold finish or stainless steel, with a metal bracelet or silicone strap, and the option of a shiny bezel on another model. We reviewed the 44mm version, but the technology is the same regardless of size.

It is priced at $ 180, which means we can forget about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 processor. Sadly, at the moment only the TicWatch Pro 3 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 processor, and it is not very feminine in design. The Fossil Gen5E has some great software benefits, with an easy-to-use fitness tracking feature and an extended battery life mode.

On the back it has a heart rate sensor, Google Fit, sleep tracking, and all the usual Google Wear OS functions, including notifications from your phone and Google Pay payments. However, it doesn’t have GPS, so it’s not for serious runners. The performance is good and the battery will last all day.

Fossil’s decision to make a smaller watch with different designs and straps makes the Fossil Gen 5E be the best option for women, at the moment.

Suunto 7

Best for running

Suunto 7 with white strap

Suunto is best known for its strong fitness watches, but in early 2020 it released its first Google WearOS-powered smartwatch. The Suunto 7 embraces the brand’s sporty design and excellent fitness tracking capabilities, combined with the most common software and excellent battery life. With regular use, it lasts two days without needing a recharge.

Additionally, the watch comes loaded with Suunto’s comprehensive training app, along with a smart “heat” map showing local walking and running routes. It also has a heart rate monitor on the back and GPS, in addition to the usual functions, including NFC. The battery improvements come from a close association with Qualcomm and adjustments made to the chipset Snapdragon 3100 inside the watch.

The Suunto 7 isn’t cheap for a WearOS watch, but it’s roughly what you’d expect to pay for a top-notch GPS-based fitness tracker smartwatch without Google’s software.

Amazfit GTR 2e

The cheapest

You may have discovered Amazfit smartwatches while searching for cheap watches on Amazon. If that’s the case, forget about the first generation of Amazfit watches. Recent models, such as the GTR 2e and GTS 2e, are significantly improved in terms of functions and design. We recommend the GTR 2e version as it is incredibly similar to the Amazfit GTR 2, only cheaper. The differences between the two devices are minimal. You may notice a more curved screen, Wi-Fi, and less internal storage, but the features don’t make much of a difference.

Manufacturers made the GTR 2e with an aluminum and glass front combined with a plastic rear. The watch is lightweight and fits comfortably on your wrist. It has a stylish 1.39-inch AMOLED screen, which is reactive and colorful. The watch is compatible with Amazfit’s operating system, which is where you’ll find the bulk of the company’s design improvements. It is fast, reliable and functional. It syncs fast with your phone, and the Zepp app that needed to sync with your watch was also improved.

What’s going on with Wear OS?

Google’s Wear OS software is changing. During its annual I / O developer conference, Google announced that it would be working with Samsung on the next generation of smartwatch software. The resulting software platform will merge with both Google’s Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen and will be called simply Wear. It has also been referred to as Wear OS 3. In addition to Samsung’s involvement, Google will also leverage the experience it has gained from acquiring Fitbit, the fitness experts.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are the first smartwatches to come with Wear installed. Google also announced that the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3, TicWatch E3 and yet-to-be-released Fossil watches arriving this year will also receive an update. However, this is not expected until the second half of 2022.

What does this mean for you? That many smartwatches with Wear OS already installed might not receive an update to the new software. This will not cause them to stop working, but it is worth considering if you plan to keep your watch for several years.

What about hybrid and connected watches?

Touchscreen watches aren’t the only esthetic tech option for your Android phone. There are also a number of hybrid watches, that is, a combination of traditional watch and smart watch functions, and connected. Connected clocks are a simpler option, which can offer basic connected functions usually related to the clock itself, such as changing the time zone and setting alarms, in an app rather than on the clock. Casio’s G-Shock connected watches are perfect examples of this, with the MTG-B2000 ranking in the luxury range, and the G-Shock GBD-200 in the more accessible connected watch segment.

What about smart watches on Amazon?

If you search for smartwatches on Amazon, you will find hundreds of results, many of which cost as little as $ 40, and which somewhat resemble the Apple Watch. With such low prices these watches are tempting, but think about what you’re getting before hitting the buy button. Although they can be described as smart watches, most are devices for tracking fitness on a watch-like body.
