These mini lab brains developed eyes | Digital Trends Spanish

In order to better study and understand the functioning and development of the brain, a group of scientists has created an organ similar to a brain that, spontaneously, developed something similar to eyes that can even react to light.

These organs, or better called organoids, are created through the use of pluripotent stem cells. And in the case of the study specimens, the organoid developed two symmetrical “optical cups” and from the center of the brain.

For scientists, the existence of this kind of eyes serves to highlight the ability of these brain-like organoids to “generate primitive sensory structures, sensitive to light and whose cell types are similar to those found in the human body” .

The eyes of this small brain developed in a time similar to that of the human eye, since they became visible and matured in a period between 30 and 50 days. In all, of the 314 brain-like organoids created by the scientists, 72 percent developed optic cups, which in turn developed retinal-like tissue and connections to other areas of the brain.

Now, the important thing is the use that can be given to this type of organoids; Mainly, scientists hope to be able to study in various fields, such as the way the eyes behave in the stage of embryonic development. But they can also be used to study diseases and conditions that affect the optical part of the brain in general.

And of course, the existence of these organoids also raises some ethical questions. Since, beyond the limitations of the organism itself, what scientists have done is create laboratory brains. And advances in the area of ​​biological technology are always inevitable.
