The seismic signals recorded on Mars by NASA’s InSight mission confirmed that the planet has a liquid and metallic core.

An international study has also shown the size of the nucleus, the structure of the crust and the mantle of the red planet.

Thus, the study of the signals of a dozen marsquakes recorded by an ultrasensitive seismometer deployed by NASA made it possible to determine the internal structure of Mars.

According to the study, the planet’s liquid core would have a radius of about 1,830 kilometers. According to the researchers, this size suggests the presence of light elements, such as sulfur, oxygen and hydrogen. While the interior of the core could be made up mainly of iron and nickel.

“This work provides the first direct measurements of the inner layers of another planet. These data are key to determine its internal structure, as well as its geological and geochemical evolution “, says Martin Schimmel, one of the authors of the study.

Until now, models of the internal structure of Mars were based on data recorded by orbiting satellites and analysis of their surfaces.

For this reason, the researchers highlight the importance of this new work.

“Knowing the size of the core of Mars and its structure provides information on how the magnetic field that once protected the planet’s atmosphere from high-energy particles could be generated.”

Scientists believe that understanding the evolution of Mars could also help us understand why Earth evolved in a certain way.
