The deepest wreck of the world was found this June 22 in the Philippine Sea. It is the remains of USS Samuel B Robertsnicknamed “Sammy B”, a United States warship built for World War II.

The discoverers were billionaire explorer Victor Vescovo and sonar specialist Jeremie Morizet.

The USS Samuel B Roberts was a 93 meters (306 ft) long destroyer escort built for the United States Navy. She met her watery grave in October 1944 after exchanging fire with a large Imperial Japanese Navy flotilla at the Battle of Samar, part of the larger Battle of Leyte Gulf.

A subsequent dive discovered the entire Sammy B wreck from stem to stern, broken into two pieces, resting on a slope at a depth of 6,895 meters (22,621 ft).

“It was an extraordinary honor to locate this incredibly famous ship, and in doing so to have the opportunity to retell her story of heroism and duty to those who may not know of the ship and the sacrifice of her crew,” Vescovo said in a statement. release.
