Generating energy without moving a single finger is already possible.

Engineers from the University of California, San Diego have developed a new wearable device that converts sweat from human fingertips into an optimal source of energy for small sensors and electronic devices. It is a thin, flexible strip that can be placed on the tip of a finger like a band-aid or band-aid and that generates small amounts of electricity when the finger sweats or pressure is applied with the pad.

According to an article published in the Joule magazine by Joseph Wang, professor of nanoengineering at UC San Diego, the device could be used in any daily activity that involves touch, “in situations that anyone would normally do, such as being at work, at home, while watching television or eating. ”.

The device is covered with carbon foam electrodes that absorb sweat and convert it into electrical energy. Below the electrodes is a chip made of piezoelectric material. This material generates additional electrical energy when pressed. As the user sweats or presses on the strip, the electrical energy is stored in a small capacitor and is discharged to other devices.

In their tests, the researchers had a subject use the device while performing sedentary activities. After ten hours, the strip collected nearly 400 millijoules of energy, enough to power a smartwatch for 24 hours. When the subject worked on his computer, doing some typing and clicking the mouse several times over an hour, the device collected almost 30 millijoules of energy.

The team is conducting further testing with the device in order to make it more efficient and durable. In future tests they will combine it with other types of energy harvesters to create a new generation of portable generators.
