Thousands of protesters have ’embraced’ the Mar Menor surrounding it from end to end this Saturday morning. The protest, called by the ILP Mar Menor platform, has mourned the salty lagoon under the slogan “for a living Mar Menor” in the face of the crisis in the lagoon due to the spillage of uncontrolled agriculture with five tons of fish dead.
With chants like “the Mar Menor is not a container” and “SOS Mar Menor”, the protesters have delineated the 73 kilometers of coastline with their banners and T-shirts, and have demanded “strong measures” to end the pollution of the lagoon .
From ILP Mar Menor they consider the protest “a success”: “It is the first time that we see the groups and citizens together with the same objective. It is what the Mar Menor needed, that we were united”, has celebrated Rocío García, promoter of the SOS Mar Menor movement.
The demonstration was also attended by a large number of associations in defense of the salty lagoon, such as Por un Mar Menor vivo, Plataforma de Los Urrutias, Posidonia tourism or Ecologists in action: “Citizens show that they are fed up with the lack of solutions for the Mar Menor and will continue to mobilize until the administrations, and especially the Regional Government, begin to apply effective measures at the origin of the problem, “said Pedro Luengo, spokesman for Ecologists in Action.
Last Wednesday, the Minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, and the Murcian president, Fernando López Miras, agreed to create a commission to solve the Mar Menor crisis. As they expressed, between the two there are “discrepancies” in the order of priorities but they have called for a fluid dialogue in a commission in which the problems that arise when applying measures are communicated.
