TikTok will silence notifications of minors by default | Digital Trends Spanish

TikTok adds a new measure to encourage responsible use of the platform by those under 18 years of age. The popular social network has reported on its blog the implementation of a new automatic notification management system with which, after a certain time, minors who use the application will not receive push notifications on their phones.

There will be two bands, one for users who are between 13 and 15 years old and another for users who are between 16 and 17 years old. The former will stop receiving notifications from 9:00 p.m. local time in their region and the latter from 10:00 p.m. local time. It is estimated that up to a third of US users of the app could be under the age of 14.

With this new function, the platform is looking for a way to seek the well-being of the youngest users in a time when they spend more and more hours online. “We want to help our youngest users develop positive digital habits from the beginning. To do this, we regularly consult pediatric experts and youth wellness advocates to develop our Youth Portal, bullying prevention guide, and other features that support the well-being of younger people, ”says TikTok in its statement.

At the beginning of this year the social network already began to integrate this battery of measures to protect minors within the service, specifically with functions against online harassment and abuse of privacy. Some of the features that were implemented then include restrictions on commenting on videos of 16- and 17-year-old users, downloading them, or even playing duets with them. In addition, TikTok has long restricted direct messaging and live broadcasts to people over 16 years old.
