Toyota opts for cameras for its autonomous vehicles | Digital Trends Spanish

Like Tesla, Toyota will rely on video cameras to develop the technology for its autonomous vehicles. This was reported by Woven Planet, a subsidiary of the Japanese company, which will continue to work with expensive radars and laser sensors (lidar).

“We need a lot of data. And it is not enough with a small amount collected by a tiny fleet of very expensive autonomous vehicles, ”he explained to Reuters Michael Benisch, Vice President of Engineering at Woven Planet.

The subsidiary’s challenge is to “unlock” one of the advantages that a large car manufacturer like Toyota would have in access to “a huge corpus of data, but with much lower fidelity”. Likewise, he stressed that it is not scalable to think of robotic cars with unaffordable systems.

The British agency pointed out that Woven Planet uses cameras that are 90 percent cheaper than the sensors it used. In addition, video capture devices “can be easily installed” in their car fleets.

The first tests were satisfactory for the Toyota subsidiary, as its autonomous systems experienced positive returns. In other words, the data from many cheap cameras was just as good as that from few expensive radar and lidar sensors.

In Benisch’s words, “many years from now, camera technology may very well catch up and outperform some of the most advanced sensors […] The question may rather be when and how long it will take to reach a level of security and reliability. I don’t think we know yet.”
