UN Secretary General sends message of hope and peace for 2022

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, issued this Wednesday a message of hope and peace for 2022 in which it highlights the main challenges for humanity in the year that begins and expresses confidence in the recovery from the pandemic.

Guterres wishes for the equal distribution of vaccines, commitment and reconciliation in conflicts, solidarity and measures against climate change, among others.

Here is the full text of the message:

The world welcomes 2022 by testing our hopes for the future.

Because of growing poverty and growing inequality.

For the uneven distribution of vaccines against COVID.

Due to the insufficiency of climate commitments.

And for the continuation of conflicts, division and misinformation.

This is not merely political evidence.

They are moral and real life tests.

And they are tests that humanity can overcome, if we commit to making 2022 a year of recovery for the whole world.

Recovering from the pandemic, with a bold plan to vaccinate everyone, everywhere.

Recovery of our economies, with the richest countries supporting the developing world with financing and investments and alleviating their debt.

Recovery of distrust and division, with a new emphasis on science, facts and reason.

Recovery from conflict, with a renewed spirit of dialogue, compromise and reconciliation.

And recovery of our planet, with climate commitments that match the magnitude and urgency of the crisis.

Times of great difficulty also offer great opportunities.

To unite in solidarity.

To unite around solutions that can benefit all people.

And to move forward – together – with hope in what our human family can accomplish.

Together, let’s make recovery our purpose for 2022.

For people, the planet and prosperity.

I wish you all a peaceful and happy New Year.
