USA has run this Sunday a military operation in Afghanistan against a terrorist target that represents a “credible” threat, according to White House sources told several US media.

The attack took place near the airport in Kabul, the country’s capital, and was carried out through a drone that launched a rocket. According to Reuters, he was targeting an explosives-laden car that could be used as a car bomb.

In the vehicle were “several suicide bombers,” according to AP, and the attack managed to “eliminate” the target.

During the day, images of a column of smoke coming from a building in Kabul, also near the airport, were seen on social media. According to Afghan sources, the explosion was caused by the impact of a rocket in a residential building. According to Al Jazeera, a child was killed in the explosion and three were injured.

It is not clear if these are two separate incidents or if the US attack and the explosion in the residential building are the same episode. According to some media, there were at least five dead in the attack, including three children.

The US military operation comes two days after another drone attacked a terrorist target in Jalalabad in the east of the country, in retaliation for the Kabul attack last Thursday. At at least 170 civilians died Afghans and thirteen US military personnel.

US President Joe Biden promised retaliation against the perpetrators of the attack, which was claimed by Islamic State-Khorasan, an affiliate of the terrorist group with a large presence in Afghanistan. Biden himself assured yesterday that the threat of new attacks was real and that there was “a high probability” of a new attack “in the next 24-36 hours.” He also said that the punitive action against the terrorists would not be the last.
