The voting day closed at 8:00 p.m. More than 10,000 affiliates were called this Saturday to choose between Gonzalo Caballero, general secretary since 2017, and Valentín González Formoso, head of the PSOE in the province of A Coruña and mayor of As Pontes for 14 years. And they have chosen to change their leader.

The replacement at the head of the party does not mean, however, that Formoso will be the PSdeG candidate for the Presidency of the Xunta de Galicia in the next regional elections, which should be in 2024. The door is open for another figure to attend When the moment comes.

Caballero arrived at the General Secretariat of the PSdeG in 2017, after winning a primary process. With him at the helm, the Galician Socialists won for the first time in a general election in Galicia. It was in the April 2019 elections. In the 2020 regional elections, in which Feijóo revalidated his absolute majority for the fourth time, however, the PSdeG failed to increase the number of seats, despite a slight increase in support, and it remained as the third force in the Galician Parliament, with 14 deputies.

The renewal of the PSdeG leadership, once the mystery of the primaries has been cleared, will end on December 7 and 8, when the XIV Congress of the party is called at the Palacio de Congresos de Santiago de Compostela.
