It has been an extraordinary year for NASA and its international partners.

To celebrate, the US space agency has released a video of some of the highlights of the past 12 months, along with a moving speech delivered by NASA chief Bill Nelson at an event at Rice University in Houston, Texas, earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the rover perseverance and the ingenuity helicopter They continued their activities on Mars, tens of millions of miles from Earth, while the astronauts continued to live and work at aboard the International Space Station about 250 miles above our planet.

More recently, NASA was finally able to launch the most powerful rocket that has ever flown. The Space Launch System (SLS) rocket will play an important role in a new era of human space exploration that began with its test launch in November as part of the Artemis I mission. Orion spacecraft uncrewed to the moon, where it came within just 80 miles of the lunar surface before returning to Earth on December 11. The successful journey prepares NASA for a crewed mission that will take the same path in a couple of years from now, and an astronaut lunar landing shortly after that.

“Throughout American history, there have been defining days,” Nelson says in the video. «Days when minds change, hearts fill and imaginations soar. Days when visions transform the trajectory of American history, which is our history.”

The NASA chief continues: “Doing what is difficult and achieving what is great, that is what agitates humanity. That is what unites us. With inspiration and innovation, no hard-hitting Herculean effort is too big. No moonshot is out of reach.

“A new generation, the Artemis generation, is ready. Ready to return humanity to the moon and then take us further than ever before, to Mars.

“Let’s continue the search to unfold this universe and keep finding unity in our discovery, so together let’s keep dreaming beyond the impossible dream that now becomes real, then traverse the virgin terrain of the once unreachable stars.”
