According to the portal Mayo Clinic, this procedure involves passing a thin, flexible tube (catheter) into the right or left side of the heart. This instrument is almost always inserted into the groin or arm.

The goal is to provide doctors with information about the heart muscle, heart valves, and blood vessels in the heart. In addition, it is performed to diagnose or treat various heart problems.

Doctors may recommend this procedure if the patient has irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), chest pain (angina), or heart valve problems, among other conditions.
