What is happening between Belarus and Poland

In recent days, the migration crisis on the border between Poland and Belarus it has become more acute. Hundreds of people, most of them from the Middle East, crowd the icy border crossing in Kuznika to enter the territories of the European Union.

It appears that the Belarusian authorities themselves are responsible for the arrival of these migrants at the border with Poland, where there have been clashes with the Polish police, equipped with riot gear. The European Commission, NATO and other territories blame Minsk for having allowed the arrival of people from Middle East and Africa and having transferred them to the border.

EU accuses Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko to unleash a ‘hybrid war’ against Poland and the Baltic countries, using migrants as pawns and designing this crisis as revenge for sanctions imposed on Minsk for the repeated violations of human rights and the repression against the opposition.

Brussels and Warsaw believe that irregular migratory pressure on the border is orchestrated by Belarus with the tacit support from Moscow, the main international supporter of the regime.

Migratory crisis

The truth is that migration crisis comes from afar. In fact, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania They declared a state of emergency months ago due to the increase in irregular immigration from Belarus.

As reported by the German daily Bild, the hundreds of immigrants who are arriving on foot to the Polish fence from Middle eastIraq – specifically from Kurdistan – from Syria; and, although in smaller numbers, of Congo and Cameroon, would have arrived by air at Minsk, in many cases going through Moscow.

The Government of Poland has registered about 30,000 attempts to cross the border so far this year, more than half of them, 17,000, only in the month of October.

It is not the first time that the Belarusian government has provoked a similar situation. Already in the month of July more than 4,000 people, mostly Iraqis, irregularly entered the Lithuania from Belarus. When Lithuania closed the border, the influx of migrants moved to Latvia and Poland, where the most important altercations are currently taking place, also taking into account that now the temperatures in that area are extreme.

The Belarusian route

The main problem is that network that the government of Lukashenko to take advantage of the vulnerability of migrants from the Middle East and some parts of Africa and encourage air traffic to Minsk as if it were a safe way to enter the European Union.

Migrants avoid more dangerous routes and choose to fly with the assurance that the Belarusian government will escort you to the border. From then on you just have to cross.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned last Monday, November 8, that the community executive is exploring “how to sanction, even through blacklisting, the third country airlines who are actively involved in human trafficking ”.

For his part, the president Alexander Lukashenko has stated that due to the sanctions imposed by Brussels, his country no longer has the capacity to restrict the flow of migrants.

The role of Russia

Faced with the massive arrival at the border, the Polish government has reinforced surveillance at the point where the greatest number of people accumulate. According to the Defense Minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, in the step there are already deployed 12,000 military. Due to this deployment, the Belarusian president has hinted that Poland seeks war with Belarus:

Fighting migrants with Leopard tanks? Excuse me. You and I, the military themselves, understand what it is today fight a war against these unfortunate people on the border between Poland and Belarus by launching columns of tanks. It is clear that this is some kind of training or is it directly blackmail».

According to the Belarusian president, “thus taking up arms in a modern world, especially in central Europe, it’s deadly».

Even though that him Kremlin denies any participation of Russia in the migratory conflict, the truth is that its support for Lukasehenko cannot be denied. On November 10, using the pretext of Poland’s military deployment to send a signal of firmness to NATO, two Russian Tu-22M3 bombers carried out reconnaissance flights in Belarusian airspace in the immediate vicinity of its western border. «Moscow and Minsk have a common position on how to react to hostile NATO steps», He assured Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister.

These flights were joined today by live fire exercises of Tu-160 bombers, also sent by Russia, in the Belarusian Ruzhanski polygon, located a few kilometers from the border line with Poland and very close to the place where more than 3,000 immigrants and the Polish forces have concentrated forces.

Threats in the midst of the energy crisis

With everything, Lukashenko it has also threatened to cut off gas transit to the European Union if Europe’s hostile actions go unchecked. The Belarusian Foreign Minister assured Lavrov that “the cause of the current problems is not in Belarus, but in Europe” because of the sanctions and the attitude of Poland, which he accused of sending 15,000 soldiers to the border “To prevent the passage of women and children”.
