We carry it everywhere every day and most of us surely do not know what version of DNI we have, what is the meaning of some fields or even the security measures they incorporate, such as holograms, laser marks, among others.

The new DNI 4.0 will be the “cornerstone” for the management from the mobile with the administration or online purchases

Since its inception in the 1940s, this document has evolved and underwent several modifications to adapt to new needs and realities, until 2006, when the first Electronic DNI With which administrative procedures and procedures could already be carried out electronically.

Now, it is planned that from August 2 the call comes into force European DNI, which adapts to the requirements of regulation 2918/1157 of the European Union. The objective is for the new European identity document to be unified with that of the other member countries, homogenizing its appearance and functions.

The new DNI 4.0

The new electronic DNI, known as DNI 4.0 It has been jointly developed by the National Police of Spain and the National Mint and Stamp Factory – Real Casa de la Moneda (FNMT-RCM). The main novelties that it incorporates, established in the ISO standard regarding identity cards, are the following:

  • It can be carried on mobile: just as it already incorporates the driving license, one of the main novelties of the new DNI is that we can carry it on our phone using the free mobile application that the Government is still preparing and that is expected to allow any citizen to accredit identity and use the electronic signature From the phone.
  • Microchip: The new DNI stores the photo, the signature and the fingerprints of the person plus the authentication certificates and the electronic signature, which are what allow us to carry out most of the public procedures online. According to him New Spanish DNI Document 4.0, this microchip will be compatible with the LDS2 digital passport standard (with the ability to add data to the electronic part of the passport to add and read the information). This microchip will have ARM Cortex M architecture, which improves storage capacity, facilitates data migration from one chip to another and is, thanks to its low consumption, very useful for mobile inspection posts.
  • Includes the denomination in English: The new DNI also bears the name National Identify Card since European regulations require that these words appear in at least one other official language of the EU institutions. On the front, in addition, the two-letter code of the Member State (ES) has been added, printed in negative in a blue rectangle and surrounded by 12 yellow stars (flag of the European Union), in the upper left corner.
  • The ID number scrolls to the top center of the document.
  • It will serve for identify the person both physically and digitally across the EU.

Regarding the dimensions, the physical DNI will keep the ID-1 form, the same as the previous one, with the same dimensions of 85.6×53.89 mm).

When will it be implemented?

This new format will be gradually implemented in all Documentation Units throughout Spain so that, next august, all can issue it to Spanish citizens.

It is also planned to launch a semi-automatic dispatch system in the coming months. to reduce waiting times when performing ordinary renewals. In addition, it also increases security because it allows to obtain the photograph in situ, at the police station itself.

Within the facilities for the renewal of the DNI, it is also expected that the payment of the fees can be made by bank card, through POS (now payment in cash is the only option).

How valid will the new DNI be?

Five years minimum and ten maximum are the years of validity of the new document. Some exceptions may be set for those under the age of ten and those over 70 years of age.

Old documents will no longer be valid as of August 3, 2031.

Substitute for DNI 3.0

The previous version of this new proposal already incorporated as its main innovation a radio frequency antenna that allows any device with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology to act as a card reader, thus eliminating the need to have an additional device.

It is, therefore, one more step for the electronic DNI or 3.0, presented in December 2015 and the only one that has been issued so far.

Towards the “digital wallet”

The new document is in line with the project European Digital Identity, a kind of “digital wallet” whose objective is to unify all personal documents in a single application. It is planned that this project will begin to see the light from October 2022.

This wallet would allow users to log into government venues, pay bills, and sign up for different services using a single ID. Access would be through fingerprints or retinal scanning.
