A new function is testing WhatsAppas the latest beta version of the app suggests that the company might introduce a username in the future, according to a report from WABetaInfo. The report noted that the section will be visible on the Profile page in Settings.
So far users need a phone number to create an account. Anyone in an individual or group chat can see your phone number.
This suggests a similarity to rival Telegram, as WhatsApp’s competing messaging app has given users the ability to hide their contact and display their usernames instead.
At the moment, WhatsApp users in groups and communities can see each other’s phone numbers. When this feature is rolled out, the app will most likely allow people to hide their phone numbers from people who are not in their contact book.
