“Good morning, Mr. Goloborodko. May I put you through to Angela Merkel?” Thus begins a gag about the incorporation of Ukraine into the European Union that President Volodímir Zelenski starred in when he worked as an actor, before launching his race for the presidency of the country. In the scene of sluga naroda (village servant), a series that aired between 2015 and 2019, the former German chancellor announces to the Ukrainian president Vasiliy Petrovich Goloborodko, played by Zelenski, that the incorporation of his country into the Union has been approved.
The scene has been retrieved by several Twitter users after President Zelensky formally requested membership. The request will now have to reach the Council, the body that, unanimously, will take the following steps. The first of these has been to grant the status of a candidate country to Ukraine, as the countries of the Western Balkans have been doing for years.
“Fuck! Wow! Thank you so much! We Ukrainians, our whole country, have been waiting for this decision for a long time,” Goloborodko replies. But, despite the enthusiasm of the professor-turned-politician and president of Ukraine whom Zelensky plays, in sluga naroda the call is a mistake by the former German chancellor. “Ukrainians? I’m sorry… There was a mistake… she was calling Montenegro.”
