Wild boars could be contributing significantly to global warming. At least that is what a study conducted by researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand determined.

According to the research, by uprooting the carbon trapped in the soil, these mammals release about 4.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year worldwide, which is equivalent to 1.1 million vehicles.

The team in charge used population prediction models in conjunction with advanced mapping techniques to determine the climate damage caused by these animals across the planet.

In fact, the researchers warn that the growing number of these animals in the world could become a major threat to the climate.

“Wild boars are like tractors that plow through the fields, turning the soil in search of food. When soil is removed by humans plowing a field or, in this case, by wild animals pulling it up, carbon is released into the atmosphere. Since the soil contains almost three times more carbon than the atmosphere, even a small fraction of carbon emitted by the soil can accelerate climate change ”, explains Christopher O’Bryan, one of the authors.

“Our models show a wide range of results, but indicate that wild boars are most likely currently uprooting an area of ​​between 36,000 and 124,000 square kilometers, in environments to which they are not native.”

As a result of these results, the researchers have made a call to continue protecting and monitoring ecosystems and the soil, especially since they are very susceptible to damage by invasive species and by the loss of carbon.
