Will Smith will not be able to attend the Oscars for 10 years | Digital Trends Spanish

After slapping presenter Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to ban Will Smith from attending all its events, including its annual awards ceremony, for 10 years.

In a statement, the agency’s board of directors said the King Richard star engaged in “unacceptable and harmful behavior.” The move “is a step towards a larger goal of protecting the safety of our artists and guests, and restoring confidence in the Academy.”

“We hope that this can initiate a time of healing and restoration for all those involved and impacted,” added the document published by media such as Variety.

The Academy stressed that Smith is no longer its affiliate, so it cannot withdraw his Oscar award, nor prevent him from being nominated or eventually winning future awards. “For comparison, convicted felons Harvey Weinstein and director Roman Polanski still keep their awards after their expulsions,” he exemplified.
