Xiaomi started 2022 in style. In many countries it is already positioned as the best seller, in addition to the fact that it has just presented its new flagship cell phone, the Xiaomi 12 Pro, to the world.

This device takes everything good that we saw in the Xiaomi 11T Pro last year and improves it. The result? A device that can fearlessly stand up to giants like the Oppo Find X5 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus.

I tried this device and I tell you that, although it is not without room for improvement, it is one of the best cell phones that I have recently analyzed. Of course, if you want to acquire it, you must have at least €999 (about $1,100), which is what the basic option costs.

Screen and design

The phone has a design that, conceptually, does not stray too far from the Xiaomi Mi 11 or the Xiaomi 11T Pro, but that adds many improvements to what we saw in them. The first and most obvious is the compaction work, since the device feels much more comfortable in the hand, despite its large size.

Xiaomi 12

Its back is made of glass, but a fantastic matte one that feels smooth, that avoids all marks and fingerprints and that also substantially improves grip. It’s a sober phone (especially in dark gray) that while it doesn’t stand out to the naked eye, it’s easy to see how well built it is just by holding it.

The screen of the Xiaomi 12 Pro is a 6.73-inch LTPO OLED made by Samsung, a combo that can only go well. The panel has a dynamic refresh rate that can go from 10 to 120Hz, plus it supports Dolby Vision, the most advanced HDR standard to date. For now, most Android apps don’t support it, although Netflix and other streaming platforms do.

In the user experience, the screen of the Xiaomi 12 Pro gives a great sharpness and more than enough brightness to use it in all scenarios. Color calibration is flawless and viewing angles are wide.

Watching a movie or a series on this phone is a joy and not only because of the screen, but because Xiaomi equipped it with a quad speaker system with two sets of identical configurations. Both at the top and at the bottom there is a woofer and a tweeter, which achieves impeccable sound quality, very rare in a mobile.

I must say that I was disappointed that this high-end model does not have a certification that guarantees protection against water or dust. At least its screen is covered by Gorilla Glass Victus and Gorilla Glass 5 on the back.

Performance and autonomy

The Xiaomi 12 Pro was the first Android phone to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. This chip is accompanied by 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of non-expandable storage.

On a day-to-day basis, performance is fast and fluid, as it is capable of performing any task, no matter how demanding. I did not notice that it got hot, except in very specific moments of multitasking, but very slightly.

Xiaomi 12

In terms of connectivity, the device offers 5G, dual SIM support, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6 or 6E (although the exact Wi-Fi version varies by region).

A 4,600 mAh battery is responsible for the autonomy of the Xiaomi 12 Pro. With this battery I got a full day of use, but not much more. The good thing is that the phone does not consume significant energy during the night and, like the Xiaomi 11T Pro, it has an incredible 120W fast charging system whose charger is included.

Xiaomi says that with the phone turned off it is possible to fully charge it in 18 minutes. I did the test with the cell phone on, because that’s how I usually do it. The device reached 70 percent charge in 15 minutes, and it took about 20 minutes to get to 100 percent.

cameras

Xiaomi’s strongest bet with this device is in its camera. It has three 50 MP lenses with the same Sony IMX707 sensors. The main one has optical stabilization and to this is added a wide angle with a field of view of 110 degrees and one with 2x optical zoom.

With this configuration and the improvements applied in the software (such as the AI-assisted scene optimizer), it goes without saying that the Xiaomi 12 Pro takes better photos than its predecessor in all scenarios.

Outdoors in good light, the color reproduction is accurate and the dynamic range very balanced. And when this is scarce, it is capable of achieving enough sharpness by containing noise well.

The telephoto and ultra-wide cameras are good, in fact the wide-angle offers similar results to the main one in good light conditions. However, I think that 2x zoom in the telephoto is very little for a phone in its price range.

The front camera is better than in previous models. The selfies have good details, although the lack of stabilization sometimes plays tricks on us.

Conclution

The Xiaomi 12 Pro has practically everything you could ask for in a high-end phone for a price that, although high, remains below the competition. Its design is discreet and the build quality very good.

The screen and audio are, in my opinion, the best I’ve ever experienced (and I’m reviewing a lot of phones). In addition, in performance and autonomy, the Xiaomi 12 Pro ties with the best on the market.

It’s not perfect at all, of course. The battery lasts less than I would have liked (although it reaches a full day without charging), plus a higher optical zoom would have been better instead of Xiaomi focusing on macro.

With all this, I think that the phone is now the most recommended that you can find in the high range, especially if you take into account what it offers and for what price it does.
